“You’re going to see a different side to the Evil Queen. You haven’t really seen her with children, and there’s a playfulness to her. It’s fun. I don’t know if it was just an instinct of mine, but I instantly saw this woman’s pain, so I, therefore, have compassion for her, and I never leave that absent, like it’s always present in both characters. With Regina, what helps her stay relatable is the adoptive mother, her love for Henry, the threat of a biological mother coming in to this town. Sometimes, that gets lost, because we know the fairy tale world so well. And we know her now as the Evil Queen, so we’re just anticipating every moment, like is she gonna rip someone’s heart out, is she gonna destroy someone’s life? Probably [laughs]. But I think as, you know, for me as the actor who’s portraying these roles, I try to keep a human side to them.”
